In the Midwest, away from any large cities, when we fortunate enough to have clear skies and a dark moon, the
Perseids
meteor shower is generally really nice. This year for the first couple
of hours after sunset, before the nearly full moon rose, we had good
viewing and great weather conditions. Unfortunately, the Perseids were
either late or in very low numbers. There were a few real nice bright
ones, but the total count was really low. I aimed a camera toward
Cassiopeia and
Perseus,
configured the timer for 60 frames with 30 second exposure at ISO-800,
and relaxed for the next half hour. The image above is the nicest meteor
captured. In addition, many airplanes, satellites, and countless
lightning bugs were captured. Sorry, but the brightest ones were seen
before the camera was set up. The forecast for this evening is not very
promising, and thunderstorms are already building on the horizon.
