Stopping gas smell on Subaru Outback

Our 2001 Subaru Outback is a great car but when the temperature is lower than freezing we start smelling gas at stoplights. The best the dealer offers, for this apparently common problem, is to tighten all the fuel line clamps "they can reach." This generally helps for a month or so and then the smell is back. A built-in dealer revenue generator.

Hopefully the last DIY tightening job will the last one. Under a bracket on the left side of the engine, supporting the power steering lines, there was a wet fuel line. To move the power steering lines aside would be a bigger job. A small 3/8" hole drilled in the top of the bracket provides access to the clamp. Put a piece of wood in the bracket to protect the lines from drill damage. While at it, tighten all other gas line and emission control line clamps. So far, after tightening an "unreachable clamp" no more gas smell. Hope this helps another Subaru owner.
